New Years get-aways available

Merry Christmas all!

We hope you're enjoying the festivities with all your favourite people, and that you've all kept dry with the flood warnings.
(Cumbria was never issued any if you were wondering).

I've been very lucky and am enjoying a fresh stack of angling books from Santa including: Fish Eye by Matt Hayes, 50 fish to catch in your lifetime, and Tom's book.

The weather here is very mild for the time of year, so despite a touch of cold and laryngitis (regardless of which there's no shutting me up) I might be out tomorrow to test my first attempt at fly dressing against some of our chub, or maybe tempt some big Silvers...

If any of you are keen to get away after the Christmas rush, and to see the New Year in with us, we do still have some availability, so give us a ring on 07770 825 896 or email us at lonspark@aol.com

Don't forget if you land one of any of our specimen species and get it verified by us (further details can be found below) you could win a free break for next year too!

Competiton to catch a free holiday!!

Lovely Chub-ly on the Fly

It's getting colder out, and that means the Chub are really starting to show!

My friend Christian and I decided to venture into the world of fly fishing this autumn, and started with a trip to New Mills Trout Farm nearby at Brampton. The day ended well with Christian taking home a 6lb Rainbow.
I on the other hand needed a little extra practice! Luckily close family friend John was soon to visit to give me some pointers.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I was due to head down to see my boyfriend, and meet up with Christian before the 3 of us tried our best fluff chucking in the Midlands.
I asked Dad if he could find a little trout rod, and he disappeared upto the Cafe. 10 minutes later he reappeared with a burgundy glass rod made by the East Anglian Rod Company, that I'm pretty sure is older than I am!
I figured I'd better have a few practice casts before heading out with the boys, and picked out a gold headed Black and Peacock caddis.
Second cast onto the water and to my surprise a hungry Chub wolfed it on the drop!
Given my previous ineptitude I was pretty surprised and very pleased, the Chub put up a great fight and the old through action rod certainly got my heart racing! Luckily Dad was on hand to snap a picture of my first fish on a fly.

Now I've heard of fly fishing for Pike, and a book has been published this year entitled "Flyfishing for Coarse Fish" by Dominic Garrett - here's hoping I'm on Santa's good list again!
Catching a summer Carp on a bread fly sounds like the challenge for next year.

28lb 8oz Mirror caught this morning!

I've been talking to angler Martyn Wickham who arrived yesterday this morning.
He's been looking forwards to his holiday - his last trip fishing was with us last November (when he caught his PB Pike but that's another story) because after breaking his arm this year, he's had to wait to get back on the bank, but what a start he's made!

He's certainly a happy chap, and so far has banked a 2lb Chub, a 4lb 8oz Tench, a 4lb Chub and at half past 6 this morning he beat his PB Carp by 11lb with a stunning 28lb 8oz Mirror!

He's fishing during the dark early hours of the morning using a method feeder tight to the margins of cottage 5's private peg, and using a Guru 4 inch hook length.
He's hair rigging one of our blood worm flavoured pellets, and quietly feeding a couple of handfuls of our halibut pellets every few hours.
It's certainly working!

Brothers Chris and Tom enjoy a weekend Predator fishing

As we reported on Facebook over the weekend a beautiful 18lb 6 oz Pike came out of Lonsdale.
Tom and Chris (pictured below) Napier stayed with us in cottage 5 over the weekend to sample a few predators.
She's a very bonny fish - I'm jealous boys!

"Hi,
my name is Thomas Napier and the picture is of my brother Christopher, we stayed in cottage 5 over the weekend.
The picture is of 18.6 pound pike Christopher caught out of Lonsdale lake, we had a great trip and the fishing was superb, thank you for the stay"

You're welcome boys, we hope to see you again soon!

Steve's first ever Pike is a Belter!

"Steve started fishing as a young boy and has been into carp fishing for around 25 years. We've been coming to Lonsdale for the past seven years but up until this year only for the carp.

Two years ago we watched someone from the big lodge land one of the pike and I think that got Steve thinking.

In May this year he half heartedly had a go at piking, hooked an absolute beauty which tail walked across the water just in front of the peg before managing to escape.
The following day I saw one of your 'monsters', just the head and shoulders but wow - we were both hooked.

When we came for the second time this year Steve was armed with the an entire shoal of spratts and renewed enthuisiasm.

Our aim was to fish from mid afternoon, straight through the night and into the next morning.
We blanked the first night and had just settled into the bivvy the next  when the alarm went - it was 10.15pm and pretty cold, and we weren't sure if it was a carp or pike until we checked the rods.

The fish put up a good fight, Steve an even better one and after about ten minutes she was in the net.
The fish was furious and Steve was terrified - but then you know that as you've seen the picture!!

Having unhooked and weighed it, a couple of ounces short of 20lb, we took the pictures and returned it to the water.

Steve caught another slightly smaller one on the Wednesday but I'd nipped home to clean the chinnys (chinchilla's) so although he took pics they are of the pike lying on the unhooking mat so aren't as good.

However we will be back again next year, already booked our dates :)

Take care Jean & Steve"

Neile and Dave's account and photo's

Hello please find some of the photos of the recent fishing trip with my dad (Dave Jestin) from cottage 1.

It was our third time to Lonsdale and Cottage 1, and we are booked in again next June 2013 for the lead up to my Dad's 65th birthday.

This was as ever an amazing week surrounded by the wonderful nature Lonsdale has to offer ospreys, owls calling to each other over the lake and a resident field mouse in my bivvy who took a liking to my Dad's fishing luggage.

The target's this week were to break the 20lb barrier for carping as I have never achieved this, and my Dad to hopefully get a double on his new rod and reel, earlier in the week he did achieve a nice 1lb roach.

We left it for our final days fishing; with minutes to spare on the Friday my Dad was about to call it a day, but his bite alarm went off and I could not believe my eyes when I helped the carp into the landing net for him, his carp which I'm holding in one of the pics due to his disability weighed in at 18lb 6oz. What a way for him to finish his weeks fishing and how wonderful that he's fishing again after a severe stroke left him with the use of just one arm. He love's Lonsdale and can't wait to revisit. After I helped him settle I went down to our peg to fish during the night with the hope of a 20 pounder. I did not believe it when the first take at 2230 hours landed me that dream fish and a fantastic end to my week a 25lb 8oz beautiful conditioned common carp!!

Many thanks and see you next June!!
Neile Jestin

Other fish that I caught during the week were a 13lb 4oz ghost carp and a 16lb 8oz linear carp, with good sport from smaller carp.

Ps the pike is from April 2012 and tipped in at just over 20 at 20lb 3oz my first over 20lb!!

The Colonel's four fish in four casts

A Couple of Days from The Colonel’s Autumn Diary

It all began with a post on my Facebook wall…………..
“Well, what a splendid day. I've just enjoyed my lunch outside in the strong autumn sun, under a clear blue sky. A mouthwatering 'New York Deli' sandwich and a fine fresh brewed Indian Assam, made with proper leaf tea, of course.

A true 'weather bonus', for sure, of which I shall take further advantage tomorrow, with a day's carp fishing at my friend, Paul Drinkall's, private Willow Pool, in the hope of landing this little fella's Dad or Grandad. After that, there's the Korean Grand Prix to anticipate at the weekend. I've just realised, I was born to retire!!!!!!!”

Thus, the very next day found me on a familiar path towards Willow Pool. No specific ‘omens’ of note but, perhaps, a couple of indicators that I’d made the right choice. First one, there was a lot of activity in the hedgerows as the birds were feeding voraciously on the last of the summer’s food supply. All appeared to be LBJ’s…….or ‘Little Brown Jobbies’, as I refer to all those whose names don’t spring readily to mind, and who all look pretty darned similar anyway. Second, the potholes in the track were reappearing, a sure sign there’d been recent frost, which causes the stone filling them to move and loosen. And, of course, the first frosts tend to encourage the Golden Scaley Ones into their pre-winter feed-up. Optimism washed over me…….I was indeed hopeful.

The pool welcomed me. Calm and still, there was a sense of expectation in the air as I readied ‘The Bishop’, 10lb line and the proven Cotswold Baits’ Chilli Garlic Sausage. Mmmmmm, good enough for me to eat, they’ll not be able to resist. And, sure enough, they couldn’t. Not long before the alarm sounded a merry squeak, the bobbin rose and my blood pumped. Not a big’un, but a hard charger alright; it still managed to make my arm ache and heart pound. Paul had spotted the hooped rod through the open doors of his workshop and called Emma over to take a photo of myself and the pretty little battler.

The little fella was quickly returned, no the worse for his visit to an alien world, but probably a tad wiser; he’ll be less easily fooled the next time.

A recast and soon the blood was pumping hard once more. This time a far better stamp of fish gave The Bishop a proper workout. Again Emma was on hand to catch the moment for me.

The Bishop poses with the pristine portly one……….the fish, not me !!!!!!!
Well, the day was becoming something special alright. But, the best was waiting just around the corner.
Within a thrice, we were in again. But now, the gloves were off. The pool had despatched one of it’s ‘big boys’ to show The Colonel who was boss. The Bishop had to strain a few more fibres in taming this big beast. Two or three times he very nearly made it to the sanctuary of those bankside reed beds, which would have meant curtains, for sure. But we won the day and a sharp whistle had Paul and Emma back at my side to help me beach this ‘whale’. Lovely, lovely fish……even gave the old Colonel a respectful salute with an erected dorsal fish for the camera.

Lunch was beckoning, but the fish had other ideas, and this lovely creature once more brought my kind hosts dashing to my aid.

So, four fish in four casts, all between elevenses and luncheon, and, although this diary entry is a tad short on words, I think the pictures tell the merry tale, don’t you??

Derek lands a monster Pike!

Derek Downes who stayed with us two weeks ago certainly enjoyed his start to the Piking season when he landed this cracking 24lb 3 oz specimen amongst many other smaller Esox.

The big hen fish was taken on chopped mackerel fishing from the left hand side of the point on Lonsdale.
Like many of our Pike she chewed the morsel in situ for awhile, so Derek initially thought he'd hook into one of our beasty big eels, but as the fight started it was obvious he'd actually hooked a monster Pike!

Well done Derek and special thanks to Mr. Raymond Harris who emailed a copy of the photo across!

In the same week we had Carp at 21lb and Roach at 2lb out - so it's a fruitful autumn all round!

Some accomodation is still available for Half-Term - call 01228 562655 or email lonspark@aol.com for details or to book!

Morning All!

It's my favourite time of year. Autumn!

The mornings are crisp and cool, but not yet cold, and the trees are just starting turn. All coarse fish species are heading into a last feeding frenzy to help see them through the winter, but it's October and that inevitably makes me think about Predators.

Catch reports are pointing to our bigger Perch making a reappearance, but this year I'm keen to have a go at a style of fishing I'd never tried before... Piking!

Luckily a friend of the family is an excellent and keen Pike angler, who kindly agreed to take me along for my first session on Saturday morning.

(Pike are a predatory fish armed with impressive teeth, gill rakes and athleticism,  they require specialist equipment and skills to not just catch but more importantly unhook and return them to the water safe and healthy. I cannot stress enough just how important it is to venture into Piking with an experienced angler beside you to help and keep both you and your catch happy at the end of the day)

We set out about 8am and headed over to the back of Lonsdale, to the edge of "Dead man's corner" where I know a huge hen fish of 28lb 8oz had been caught not once but twice already this season.
I wasn't too keen to be introduced such a grand lady of an esox my first trip out, but I knew Richard would love to meet her!
(I'd brought along Dad's massive carp unhooking mat, and another smaller one to give us plenty of room - just in case!)

We settled on deadbaiting using some frozen Roach and Mackerel that we sell in the shop, and threw in a few chopped up sections as free offerings and added interest.

I settled on the rods off to the left - away from the stately home of the fish I was thinking of as Lady of the Manor, looking for a more gentle introduction among smaller Jacks.
I didn't have to wait for long!

There you have it my first ever Pike!
As soon as I struck the bite I couldn't believe the believe the fight - I could tell he wasn't a big fish, but he used every lean muscle to resist. As Richard slipped the net under him I felt myself breath out - I'd unconsciously held my breath throughout the fight!
Richard quickly and calmly demonstrated the proper technique for unhooking, and we had used single hooks to make it easier.
Wary that he'd put his all into the fight I slipped the little Jack into the water and held him steady for a few moments until he decided firmly he'd had enough of my company. Champion!

Over the next 40 minutes I had two bites, but missed them both! One snapped my trace, and the other was undeniably a poor hit on the bite.

A little over an hour after my first fish, I struck a gentle inquiry (it turns out sometimes Pike eat a deadbait insitu so you have to be set up for this) and found myself with a bigger opponent.
This fish was much more aggressive that the little Jack, and even tried to tail walk.
Richard helped me with the net and again demonstrated handling (this one was a little trickier to unhook) For our super speedy photo I couldn't quite get over the densly packed weight of the fish - or the fact that it was quite a bit longer than my torso!
After a minute and half of nursing in the water, admiring the beautiful camouflage patterns up close as the sun filtered through the top two inches of sunlight, I said good bye to my second Pike.

A short while later Matt (Amy's boyfriend) appeared, keen to learn what he could about Piking in 20 minutes. After a decent bite, Richard kindly handed the fight to Matt, who landed a cracking fish - the colours really popped!

All the time Richard's baits sat in prime position, awaiting "The Lady" to no avail.
She must have been unimpressed with the uncouth company he had brought!
In the end his patience was rewarded with one of the biggest eel's I have personally ever seen:

More impressive was the way Richard lulled it into a torpor (something I'd never seen done) and then unhooked it easily as lay motionless - we even got to snap a quick picture!
The big eel is a very different prospect to the smaller babies I occasionally see, and actually a really impressive creature!

I love days like this - when someone or something opens up a whole new element of the water to me, showing me something I had never suspected.

For me I think Lonsdale will always be bottomless - there will always be something to learn, some fish uncaught.

A letter and a rod for Miss Holly Washington

Dear Miss Holly Washington,

I hope you don't mind be posting this on the blog, but it's quite a good story!

Perhaps 18 months ago you came on holiday with your family, and you were lucky enough to have a rather nice home-made first fishing rod. It had started life as a telescopic pen rod, but was later adapted using a section of an older rod to improve it.
Unfortunately a big fish grabbed hold of the end of your line, and wary of being pulled in yourself you wisely decided to surrender you first fishing rod to the deep.

I am happy to report that in a chance discovery we recently fished your rod from the water of Lonsdale!
It was very mucky, and a little worse for wear but after our initial investigations and atttentions we found the reel still works after a fashion.
I hope you don't mind but I felt that I ought to test the rod before announcing it's recovery - it's actually very very nice! My compliments to your personal rod builder!
With a delicate float (one of my own home made creations, using a quill from Lonsdale's mallards) I had tremendous fun catching alot of our Gudgeon and Roach as you can see below:

I hope you don't mind my borrowing it!

Anyway we have it safe and sound, and it's had a bit of a clean and an oil so it's ready waiting for you when you return!

Best fishes!

Emma
(and all at Lonsdale)

PS We would love to hear from you!

Holly's reply:

Dear Emma

How wonderful that you have found my rod,I am so pleased as My Daddy made me that rod with the help of my Uncle Paul Dodd who was on holiday with us,they finely tuned it
so that it would stay together, it looks like it worked wonderfully, i am so made up.

your daddy gave me a telescopic rod to replace the one I had lost, it was one that both you and your daddy had used and I won a junior fishing match with it, my daddy also won the adults fishing match on the same day... you have a photo of me on your blog under July 2010 double act and there is a photo of me and my Daddy but i caught my fish with your daddy's rod.

I am still using that rod when i go fishing as i like it so much, i also have a Pink rod and Orange rod but I haven't used them yet.

I am so happy that you had a good day fishing with the rod, and I hope that you have many more really good days fishing with it before i come on my holidays next year and pick it up.

I look forward to seeing you Emma.

all my love and lots of kisses

Holly xx

We were glad to hear back from Linda and Andy after their recent stay with us, their highlights included:

A 1lb Perch
Plenty of lovely Carp
A robin nick named George Clooney (going grey at the front)
And an interesting background in the shot of Linda's night time common - ghostly silhouettes or watermarks on the lens? You decide!

A note from John Preskey

"I have attached a photo of one of the many landing net roach that I caught, this was about 1 1/2 lb and I must say that even though the weather was a bit unkind, the roach fishing was the best I have ever had and hopefully if I can manage a few days next year the weather may be a little kinder as well.
Best regards

John"

60 years to the day

We all have dates that we remember.
Days when we wake up in the morning and the numbers on the calendar recall some life changing event, for better or worse.

For us today is one those days, but what we recall isn't something we did, some event from our lives.
Today marks an event in the history of angling.
Today it is 60 years since Dick Walker caught and landed Clarissa (also called Ravioli by Dick) at 44lb, from Redmire, smashing the record 26lb at the time. 60 years ago he caught the impossible. His record stood for another 30 years.

Dick Walker with Clarrissa

Although most of us never met him, Dick shaped angling and anglers in ways often unknown to the modern piscator.
Not just the lucky and skilled hand on the rod that landed a record fish, Dick invented the Arsley bomb, developed the electronic bite alarm, was a prolific and quality author, and his reknown as a rod maker has some of his split cane Mk IV's changing hands for thousands of pounds even today.
He inspired the inclusion of a scientific approach to fishing, and inspired a generation of specimen anglers.

Dick Walker and Redmire hold a special place in the heart of Lonsdale.
Not only were Dick's acheivements a fan to flame a passion for angling that eventually led to Paul developing his own unique fishery, but years ago we were lucky enough to stock 8 fish, from a secret location, who share the same heritage as Clarissa and her contemporaries. The water haunted by these fish is named in their honour and in tribute - Reedmere.

We could talk and write about this man and this catch, and all the stories surrounding him for a long time.
(Like Dick's gentlemanly insistence that Chris Yates' eventual new record carp be instated and recognised)

Although a dedicated and phenomenal speciemen hunter, Dick served a long apprenticeship fishing from 4 years old with his Gradfather to gain the skills and unearth the knowledge that no one else did.

I believe many modern anglers would benefit from learning a little more about this man, his methods and philosophy.

In a world of commericial waters, all in one Carp kits from Argos, and "Instant Carp Anglers" demanding a 20-30lb fish for their first ever cast, it's not just today we need to remember Dick and his contempories.
We need to share the stories and lessons of such great anglers, to learn from them, tomorrow as well.

Dad as ever emulating Dick, with a lovely Mirror caught on his own stepped up MK IV, coupled to a Crown Royal Jecta centre pin. His weapon of choice for our bigger Carp.

The Colonel's Diary

Colonel’s Diary – Stardate 4th September 2012-09-05

Apologies in advance to my one regular reader, but this has to be a short ( well, shortish!!) one as I know Paul is anxious to receive my report on the ‘new bait’.

Another visit to my favourite pool; you know, the one named ‘Willow’, where my nemesis, the leviathan, Walter, resides. This time my intention was to try out two new things. A new bait, in the form of a Chilli Garlic Sausage boilie by Cotswold Bait Creations and my new rod, a ‘Merlin’ by The Edward Barder Rod Company, eleven feet of the most delightful built cane you could ever wish to hold. The bait was from Paul’s shop and in the form of a ‘session bucket’ and amazing value, in my view. The rod, pristine and ‘pre-owned’, was the result of some hard bidding on a well known auction site. Well, I am a pensioner, and never able to afford the £1600 price tag on a new one.

No omens on the journey this time, unless you count being hounded by ‘white van man’ on the final leg, down the windy, unmade track to Lonsdale Park, that is. However, whilst tackling up, I was treated to a fine display of aerobatics by a large, dark buzzard, against a backdrop of fluffy, cotton wool clouds in a watery blue sky. He even did a spot of ‘wind-hovering’, for me. Must have thought he was a Kestrel; first time I’ve seen that flight pattern in a buzzard.

I attached one of the Sausage boilies onto a simple hair rig with running lead stopped 6” up the line with a split shot and heaved the lot, with a small PVA bag, out towards the middle of the pool, where intermittent bubbling was to be seen. I’d made up some bags at home with a mixture of the chilli sausage pellets that came with the session bucket, plus some chilli stick mix and mixed pellets. My reasoning was the fish would have a penchant for the hot ‘n spicy stuff, just like their owner!!!! And, sure enough, within the half hour, Delkim screamed for attention and I lifted Merlin into a pleasing hoop. Result, a two and a half pound Chub. Chub?????? Do they not understand what species boiles are designed to attract ? Nonetheless, a delightful little scrapper, I was glad I’d set up a balanced tackle arrangement, matching 6lb line to my willowy Merlin. A reassuring start, but before I can classify it as ‘an instant bait’, I needed to set my hook in a ‘golden scaley one’.

No sooner said than done. Next to fall to the seductions of Mistress Chilli Garlic was a hard scrapping Ghost Carp, testing Merlin’s metal to a greater degree. I probably bullied him a tad, as he was still tussling in the folds of my net when I raised him into an alien environment, and he indignantly gave me a good spraying of lake water for my trouble. Very promising; the classification of ‘instant’ was on the horizon. But I needed to set my steel into something larger before making it a ‘definite’.

Sure enough, the strike from the next screaming run was altogether something different. You know, that almost ponderous, cement sack but moving, feel on the end of your line. Of course, it didn’t last long. The fish decided it ought to be going in the opposite direction to the one I intended. It turned, quite violently, and the inevitable happened with a single shake of it’s head, aided by the creature’s sheer bulk. ‘Son of Walter’ had just got the better of me, I think.
It’s highly likely the next muncher of a deep red Chilli Garlic Sausage ball bait was probably Walter himself. I know lost fish always grow in the mind’s eye, ‘the one that got away’ and all that, but this latest hooked fish really did have little regard for me or Merlin. If I’d been using line capable of giving him a fair fight, then Merlin would no longer be with me in one piece, of that I am sure. I was well and truly undergunned and, although I had him on for longer than the previous ‘big ‘un’, after a couple of minutes of the Colonel’s softly softly approach he decided enough was enough, and ploughed off towards the reeds. It was then that and we parted company.

I, like most anglers, do not enjoy losing fish, but I’m comfortable in the knowledge the barbless hook and lead will be quickly shed. Even so, I called it a day with Merlin and the golden scaley ones and went back to float fishing for Roach, vowing to bring ‘The Bishop’ and 12lb line with me next time. One thing, though, I reckon this Chilli Garlic Sausage stuff is a bit of a winner………but, keep it to yourself, eh?
